Close to Home: Meet Elizabeth Dugan, MD, Signify Health Physician

By Signify Health Team on 3/26/24 10:00 AM

At Signify Health, our mission is to build trusted relationships to make people healthier. Our national network of more than 12,000 clinicians works to help people gain a more comprehensive view of their health by conducting In-home Health Evaluations (IHEs). During an IHE, clinicians identify chronic conditions, close gaps in care, and address social determinants of health, making it possible for health plan members to get connected to the right care for their unique needs.

We’re proud to showcase the clinicians helping us build a more connected, effective care experience for all – and their personal stories that make this important work feel #ClosetoHome. This is Elizabeth’s story.

Health care can be confusing, especially for people with complex medical conditions. Elizabeth Dugan, MD, is committed to creating simplicity and empowering health plan members to take an active role in their health.

Time with her father, a cancer drug researcher, sparked Dr. Dugan’s interest in health care. Experiences with family reinforced the importance of clear communication.

“When a loved one is in the hospital, you often feel like you don’t know what’s happening. I never wanted my patients or the health plan members I see with Signify Health to feel that way,” she said.

And based on the feedback Signify Health receives from members, she’s succeeding. Members consistently report how much they learn during Dr. Dugan’s visits.

“Dr. Dugan was wonderful. She shared so much helpful information, much more than I receive from my other clinicians,” one member said.

A Signify clinician for more than four years, she has two tips to recommend to her peers:

  1. Familiarize yourself with the Signify Health app and the questions covered during the In-home Health Evaluation (IHE). As a result, you can remain focused on the member, not your iPad.
  2. Ask the member to describe their typical day. This question will give you a good picture of the member’s health and their activities of daily living.

“I love the flexibility of working at Signify Health. It’s easy to manage my work responsibilities while fitting other things into my schedule. I encourage other clinicians to take advantage of this, too,” she said.

Dr. Dugan earned her bachelor’s degree in physiology from Michigan State University and a medical degree from the Penn State School of Medicine. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine.

In her free time, Dr. Dugan loves spending time with her extended family and nurturing her niece’s love of science through regular museum visits. She also enjoys traveling, cycling, and running.
