Top Tips for Managing Diabetes During the Holidays

The holidays are a time for family, celebration and delicious food, but they can also make it harder to stay on track with your health goals. In fact, according to the American Diabetes Association, 49% of people with type 2 diabetes report that managing their condition is harder during the fall and winter holidays due to changes in their routines, sugary treats and added stress.

As we observe National Diabetes Awareness Month this November, it’s a great time to remember that with a little planning and mindful choices, you can enjoy the season without sending your blood sugar on a roller coaster ride.

Here are my recommended tips to help people with diabetes stay balanced, healthy and festive. While the focus is on maintaining stable blood sugar, I’ve found these tips helpful for anyone who wants to stay on top of their health goals:

    1. Know your numbers: Check your blood sugar more often during the holidays. New food, travel and schedule changes can affect your numbers in unexpected ways.
    2. Stay active: A short walk after a meal helps lower your blood sugar and improve digestion. Even a short, 10- to 15-minute stroll can make a big difference.
    3. Travel smart: If you are traveling on a vacation or visiting your family, make sure you have enough medicine for an extra day or two. You never know if you will have a travel delay.
    4. Don’t skip meals before the big feast: It’s tempting to “save up” calories, but skipping meals can cause your blood sugar to drop and lead to overeating later. Eat balanced, smaller meals before holiday dinners to keep your glucose or blood sugar steady.
    5. Plan ahead for special events: Look at the menu before you go or bring a dish you know fits your plan. Having one or two healthy go-to options helps you enjoy the gathering without stress.
    6. Practice moderation: You don’t have to skip dessert entirely, just practice moderation and be selective. Take a small portion of your favorite sweet, eat it slowly, and savor every bite.
    7. Limit alcohol and drink wisely: Alcohol and sugary drinks can impact your blood sugar levels. As an alternative, I often recommend sparkling water with lemon or sugar-free options.
    8. Manage stress: Holiday schedules and changes in your daily routine can cause stress and raise your blood sugar levels. Try deep breathing, listening to music or taking short breaks for yourself.

If you’re concerned about managing diabetes or other chronic conditions this season, talk to your primary care provider for personalized advice.

Signify Health can help you prioritize your well-being during the holidays with an In-Home Health Evaluation (IHE). If you're eligible through your health plan, a licensed clinician can visit you at home—at no additional cost—to check vital health numbers, screen for chronic conditions, discuss vaccines and other preventive services. We can even help connect you with a primary care provider if needed.

Remember: The holidays are about connection, not perfection. Whether you’re managing diabetes or simply trying to stay healthy, small, mindful choices can make a big difference. And if you stray from your plan, give yourself grace—just get back on track the next day.
